Who We Are
Save Our Parks is a passionate group of civilians dedicated to preserving our precious open spaces for our communities and the public as a whole. As our cities and urban areas continue to expand, the need for accessible outdoor spaces has never been greater. Our mission is clear: to protect our natural park environments from the threat of development, ensuring they remain open for the enjoyment of current and future generations. We believe that everyone deserves the opportunity to experience the beauty of nature within our city limits.
Mission
Our primary focus revolves around safeguarding what should be, and always has been, public land. We are committed to maintaining the integrity of our parks and ensuring they remain true to their purpose as open areas for all to enjoy. Our mission extends beyond preservation; we aim to develop best practices that can be implemented nationwide, sustaining parks across South Africa. Our ultimate goal is to create spaces where the public can enjoy the outdoors and where all parks remain parks..
Projects
Our current focus is on the Field & Study Park in Sandton. This beautiful green oasis is an area of *critical biodiversity and an **ecological support area, testament to the importance of preserving our natural spaces. Through our efforts in this park, we aim to establish a blueprint for best park practices that can serve as a template for the preservation and enhancement of other parks throughout South Africa. Together, we can ensure that these invaluable public assets remain open, accessible, and thriving for generations to come.
*Critical biodiversity is of paramount importance as it represents the foundation of our planet’s ecological balance and resilience. This invaluable resource, often concentrated in specific regions as indicated by biodiversity maps like the one provided by San Parks, is home to diverse species and ecosystems that contribute to clean air, water, and food security. Preserving critical biodiversity is not only an ethical duty but also essential for maintaining the health and sustainability of our planet for present and future generations.
** Ecological Support Areas, as highlighted in the biodiversity map, are vital regions that play a crucial role in maintaining the health and stability of ecosystems. These areas provide critical support functions such as habitat connectivity, nutrient cycling, and natural pollination, which are essential for the survival of various species. Preserving and conserving these Ecological Support Areas is not just a matter of protecting individual habitats but ensuring the long-term viability of entire ecosystems and the services they provide to humanity.
